Rio Ferdinand has agreed a deal to sign for Queens Park Rangers.

The 35-year-old former England defender was told last month he was surplus to requirements at Manchester United. Although sad to be leaving Old Trafford, Ferdinand made it clear that he wanted to continue playing with a top-flight club.

He has been working as a BBC pundit at the World Cup in Brazil and, although he had the option of embarking on a full-time television career, he is expected to return to England to the complete the transfer, with the deal confirmed by the club this week.

Ferdinand was the most expensive player in English football when he joined United from Leeds for £29.1 million in July 2002.

He went on to make more than 300 appearances, but was hampered by injuries in recent seasons, first under Sir Alex Ferguson and then David Moyes

United’s new manager, Louis Van Gaal, decided not to offer Ferdinand a new deal as he seeks to rebuild the defence.
