Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig, August 22
The German Bundesliga kicks off with one of the most interesting clashes of the league. Bayern Munich want to defend their title, while RB Leipzig need to prove that their 7th-place finish last season was an accident. Both teams started the season with a win: the Bavarians defeated VfB Stuttgart in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, and the Red Bulls beat modest SV Sandhausen in the German Cup.
During the summer transfer window, Bayern strengthened their squad with Luis Díaz from Liverpool, and the winger has already scored his debut goal in the game against VfB Stuttgart. RB Leipzig sold their attack leader Benjamin Šeško to Manchester United and hope that Loïs Openda and newcomer Rômulo will score regularly.
In their last H2H match in Munich, Bayern crushed RB Leipzig 5-1. Vincent Kompany’s team wants to start the Bundesliga season with a confident victory, but the Red Bulls will try to surprise the champions.
Odds for the match: W1 – 1.264, X – 7.2, W2 – 11.7.
Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur, August 23
Manchester City’s crisis at the end of last year showed that Pep Guardiola was late in rebuilding the team. In the winter, the Citizens signed Omar Marmoush, Nico González and two young defenders, and in the summer, the club was joined by Rayan Aït-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and James Trafford. Reijnders scored a goal and provided an assist in the round 1 match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Cherki showed his scoring skills eight minutes after coming on as a substitute. In addition, Erling Haaland had another bright start to the season, scoring twice in the game against Wolves.
Tottenham started the Premier League with a 3-0 victory over Burnley. Thomas Frank’s team outplayed their opponents in almost every aspect, but the match against the league newcomers can hardly be called a tough challenge. Spurs’ real test was in the UEFA Super Cup match. The Londoners had started the game well, pressing hard and taking a two-goal lead, but they failed at the end of the match and lost the trophy in a penalty shootout.
Last season, Tottenham beat the Citizens 4-0 in Manchester. Surely, Pep Guardiola and his players haven’t forgotten that defeat and will be looking to get their revenge.
Odds for the match: W1 – 1.478, X – 4.99, W2 – 6.72.
Newcastle United vs Liverpool, August 25
This summer, Newcastle and Liverpool often appeared together in football news. First, the Reds tried to sign the Magpies’ leader, Alexander Isak, and then they beat Newcastle in the race for Hugo Ekitiké. The Swedish striker still wants to join the English champions and is putting pressure on Newcastle’s management. All these events add intrigue to the clash.
Newcastle started the season with a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa. In the first half, Eddie Howe’s team didn’t let their opponents shoot on goal. In the middle of the second half, one of the Villans’ players was ejected, but Newcastle still failed to score.
Liverpool beat Bournemouth 4-2 in the opening round. Federico Chiesa secured victory for his team in the final minutes of the match, and the game showed that the reigning champions could have big problems defending their title. The team’s defense was unreliable: Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez paid more attention to the attack, Virgil van Dijk hadn’t reached his best form yet, and the Reds’ expensive newcomer Florian Wirtz disappeared on the pitch.
The teams’ last H2H match was in the League Cup final, with Newcastle beating Liverpool 2-1. This definitely gives the Magpies more self-confidence.
Odds for the match: W1 – 3.62, X – 3.935, W2 – 2.019.
