The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially declared lawyer Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola as its flag bearer for the upcoming Kawempe North parliamentary by-election.
Mr. Nalukoola emerged victorious in an internal party contest that saw him compete against nine other aspirants.
The candidates were subjected to a party debate last week as part of NUP’s selection process. His competitors included Umar Magala, Muhammad Lusswa Luwemba, Mathias Mulumba, Moses Nsereko, Salim Sserunkuuma, Fredrick Kakiika, Charles Rubagumya, Kenneth Ssekungu, and Saul Kulya Zziwa.
Announcing the results, Ms. Mercy Walukaba, the chairperson of NUP’s Election Management Committee (EMC), revealed that Mr. Nalukoola secured the party’s endorsement with an impressive 71 percent score.
The Kawempe North parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, a member of NUP, last month.
With the party’s backing, Mr. Nalukoola is set to face off against candidates from other political parties in the by-election scheduled for March 13.
