It was all about fashion and music at the AfroPunk festival which was held recently in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The two-day festival which describes itself as “a safe place, a blank space to freak out in, to construct a new reality, to live your life as you see fit, while making sense of the world around you” attracted scores of festival goers with each flaunting and celebrating their own individuality in creative, colourful and exciting high fashion looks.

Despite a heavy downpour late in the afternoon on day one that left a soggy ground, the festival goers braved the mud as they danced and enjoyed performances from several artistes who included Tha Cut, Jojo Abot, Thebe and Blitz the Ambassador among others. On day two, with the sun shinning bright, festival-goers were entertained by international artists, including British performer Laura Mvula, and American singer Anderson .Paak among others.

Meanwhile, this was the first time the AfroPunk festival was being hosted in Africa. Birthed in New York, it has also been hosted in other cities including Paris, London, and Atlanta.

The festival also champions inclusion of people of all races, genders, colours and sexual orientations. Screens flashing the messages rejecting ableism, sexism, homophobia and racism were on display throughout the festival.

Here are some photos captured during the festival:
