Let’s face it, artistes are losing it in the name of being creative. After artistes merged efforts and did Tubonga Nawe, people were enraged. Sad. And among the estranged lot were fellow artistes. Among the fellow artistes was a one Bana Mutibwa. Confession: I like this lad’s creativity. Honest to God, he’s quite a lyrical gem. One of the best Luga-flow lyricists around. He went and did a version of Tubonga Nawe, turning guns towards the original concept. He called his version ‘Tetubonga Nawe’, which is the opposite of ‘Tubonga Nawe’.
I sat and listened in; good punch lines that will give you a toothy laughter here and there, but the song was nonsensical, for the most part. While at it, he threw verbal darts at the regime, making a heap of hogwash baseless statements, you know, trying to twirl words together to rhyme. It didn’t work for me.
No, I am non-partisan. I viewed it as one of those nonsensical rants folks always let out of their derrieres when they stand and look at others with burning envy. This freestyle claptrap is the reason Ugandan music has failed to get legs and soar high. It’s songs like these that have cast a shadow over our music industry. It’s songs like these that have rendered certain artistes as ‘forever upcoming’.
Bana, you could have done better. You could have done better instead of stooping that low. Yes, the public will cheer you up, you know, for being such a brave soul, but musically speaking, that was a heap of rubbish. Next time, buddy. Next time!
