Airtel Uganda today made good on its pledge to donate 2 million shillings per Uganda Cranes goal scored during the just completed CHAN competitions.
Airtel pledged to impact the lives of children in Uganda by improving and supporting schools across the country. This has been done through their CSR program where a school is ‘adopted’ every year and it is taken under the care and sponsorship of Airtel.
Airtel promised to hand over sports kits and money (6 million shillings) to two schools that are under their Adopt-A-School initiative. The schools are; St. Ponsiano Kyamula Primary School in Makindye Division and Ndeeba Church of Uganda Primary School in Kayunga. Present at the handover was Mr. Katabira Francis the headmaster of St. Ponsiano Kyamula Primary School. Airtel gave away 3 million shillings per school seeing that there were only three goals scored during the CHAN competitions.
Airtel further promised more support and that it would be increasing its CSR activities so as to give back more to the community. “We already have CSR Initiatives such as Airtel Rising Stars and Adopt-A-School; Our School Esoomero Lyaffe — the cash will go towards enhancing sports talent in schools at grass root level” Said the Airtel Marketing Director Prasoon Lal.
Speaking at the ceremony, The FUFA president, Mr. Edgar Watson said that; “We are grateful for all the support that Airtel continues to give to our sports and education. We need more such initiatives so as we can build the youth and encourage them to be part of social responsibility. When children take part in sports, it’s not only for fun but also for their growth and well-being. We have seen Airtel take over and inject more money in the football sport and we are hopeful the kits and money given today will help build the sport in these schools”
Mr. Watson also thanked Airtel for their continued support of football straight from the grassroots with the Airtel Rising Stars (an annual tournament where young talent is identified and nurtured all around the country) and all the way to the national team.
