In a recent interview on Urban TV, Dancehall artist Zex Bilangilangi voiced strong criticism against various music bodies and associations, likening them to scammers who exploit artists’ works without contributing meaningfully to the industry.

The singer expressed frustration, stating that these entities have failed to uphold essential initiatives such as copyright law enforcement.

During the interview, Bilangilangi emphasized the lack of tangible action from music bodies, like The Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) and Uganda Musicians Associations (UMA) suggesting that they have been inactive for an extended period.

He asserted that instead of supporting artists and advocating for their rights, these organizations have focused on profiting from their creative endeavors.

“All these musicians’ bodies/associations are like scammers. They have done nothing since way back. They are like reaping off from our works instead of striving to implement important things like the copyright law,” Bilangilangi stated candidly.

The singer’s comments shed light on longstanding grievances within the music industry regarding the efficacy and accountability of governing bodies. Bilangilangi’s remarks reflect a broader sentiment among artists who feel marginalized and exploited by the very institutions designed to protect their interests.

Copyright infringement remains a significant concern for musicians globally, with many struggling to assert their rights and receive fair compensation for their work. Bilangilangi’s call for greater emphasis on implementing and enforcing copyright laws underscores the urgency of addressing these issues within the music industry.

The interview with Zex Bilangilangi serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by artists in navigating an industry fraught with exploitation and inadequate regulation.

It also highlights the importance of collective action and advocacy in effecting meaningful change to protect the rights and livelihoods of musicians worldwide.
