Ugandan-born socialite and entrepreneur Zari Hassan, also known as ‘The Bosslady’, has urged musicians in Uganda to broaden their horizons by learning from the music scenes of South Africa and Nigeria if they aspire to gain international recognition.

In a recent statement, Hassan emphasized the importance of studying the music industries of other countries, particularly those like Nigeria, South Africa, and Jamaica, known for their vibrant and globally influential music scenes.

She highlighted the need for Ugandan musicians to diversify their music genres beyond the confines of “Kidandandali,” a popular local genre, which she believes limits their potential for international crossover success.

“Ugandans should learn from Nigerians, South Africans, Jamaicans, on how they are doing their music. If they can look at all those countries in terms of music genres. We are stuck in ‘Kidandandali’ type of music which can’t crossover,” Zari Hassan stated.

Hassan’s advice comes at a time when the global music industry is increasingly interconnected, with artists from various countries collaborating and influencing each other’s styles.

She stressed the importance of adapting to evolving trends and incorporating elements from diverse musical cultures to appeal to a wider audience beyond Uganda’s borders.

As a prominent figure in both Ugandan and South African entertainment circles, Hassan’s insights carry weight within the industry.

Her advocacy for Ugandan musicians to embrace a more global perspective reflects a growing recognition among artists and stakeholders of the need to adapt to the changing dynamics of the music business.

In response to Hassan’s remarks, some Ugandan musicians have expressed openness to exploring new musical styles and incorporating international influences into their work.

Many recognize the potential benefits of diversifying their sound to reach broader audiences and expand their opportunities for success on the global stage.
