Youths have been tipped on how to be better players in good urban governance while using ICT to improve their skills and knowledge. This was during a public dialogue hosted at Victoria University on Friday, held under the theme; “Promoting good Urban governance and youth participation.”
In his opening remarks at the public dialogue, Mr. Byamukama Maximus, the Dean Faculty of Science & Technology at Victoria University, noted that the rationale for such discussions comes as part of the institution’s mandate to create new knowledge and solutions for their surrounding environment.
“As part of Victoria University’s mandate to provide a holistic education, we decide to organise events like this. Its our way of making sure that we play our role in nation building to deliver on our mission to create new knowledge and solutions to our immediate surrounding,” Mr. Byamukama said.
“They also help us to create a knowledge transfer process which is more meaningful and more complete,” he added.
Meanwhile, the panelists of the day who included Denis Kagimu, Technical Director SOMESA solutions and Mugisa Howard Anderson, Executive Director Federation of Young Entrepreneurs Uganda could not emphasize enough the role of ICT in empowering the youth in their day-to-day lives.
Anderson iterated that youth should stop using social media for merely gossiping as he advised them to instead use the networking platforms to empower themselves by creating forums where they can share knowledge that will improve their skill sets.
Denis also urged the youths to get off their laurels and use ICT to empower themselves with knowledge and skills that will help them to generate more income.
On the other hand, the youths expressed their willingness to work, however, they called up on government to put in place policies that create equal opportunities for them.
The event attracted several young students, entrepreneurs, technocrats and government leaders.
