Global Platform Uganda, a network for youth-led activism, hosted a conference for young women and girls in Apac district on Friday.
Held under the theme, “building on women’s strength for a better future in a COVID-19 world”, the conference brought together over 30 young women leaders who shared knowledge on leadership and also discussed ways to create innovative and sustainable solutions for the challenges that women face in society today.
“The two-day conference was conducted to dive deeper into the perspectives of feminist leaders as they navigate gender norms. So we invited young feminists who shared their experiences, and also offered deep insight into leading with power and purpose in moments.” Byaruhanga Frank, the Digital Learning Inspirator at Global Platform Uganda explained.
Among the other issues discussed was sexual harassment, stereotypes amongst women and how they can be addressed, as well as social and cultural norms.
“There are cultural norms and practices that still marginalize women, but after this conference, I feel empowered to challenge them in our society,” Sandra Abaho, one of the participants noted.
