Paul Kisakye is a young man I met during my travails at the World of Inspiration’s famous monthly event code-named; “Authors’ Inspiration.” He embodied everything that you would expect to find in an awakened man, someone who was living his passion, one step at a time. However, what I really didn’t expect that he would soon take his passion to another level and use it to inspire the nation.
On 18th October 2014, he was to write on his Facebook Timeline:
“So there’s this idea I’ve been tossing around in my head for a while now. I love chocolate muffins. and I love writing. so I’m going to create chocolate muffins, pack them in pairs and write some of the most beautiful quotes I’ve ever come across. by doing this, I’ll be having two of my passions meeting: writing and cooking. every pair of muffins will have a handwritten message from me, and will be packed with a lot of love. production starts tomorrow. and I’ll have pics ready for you as soon as I start producing.
Each of these pairs will cost 2000 only and I’ll personally deliver them to you, my friends, as long as you’re in the central business district of Kampala.
Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for Wordy Cakes!
So, who would like to pre-order the first batch that comes out on Monday?”
My initial reaction to Wordy Cakes, was “what the hell does wordy cakes mean?” I couldn’t keep wondering. “Were the words inscribed on the cake themselves?” “Did the cakes come in form of words?” Or were these some new kind of cakes that actually spoke actual words?
Now I get to find out, that beneath the word cakes, comes quotes to inspire the buyer. In other words, as one feeds the body, one also feeds the mind. For starters, I didn’t see this kind of innovation coming from a Ugandan, most especially a Ugandan youth.
In fact, this is what Stella Nyanzi one of the recipients of Wordy Cakes had to say;
“The Unemployed Brotherhood in Uganda is an important movement of young men and women who have completed their education but have no jobs. Some have been on the streets looking for work for three or more years. Their movement is renown for planting coloured pigs and piglets in government spaces such as Parliament, as well as public spaces. Their resistance to systemic failure offers interesting critique to governance issues in Uganda.
Contrary to unemployed youths, is a young man I first met when I received a free gift of chocolate cup-cakes. Paul Kisakye is a facebook friend who first encouraged me through a comment written in response to my post about working under a terrible boss. Paul advised me to leave my job. He shared his experience of resigning from his job because he could no longer stand unfair work policies. Shortly after, I received another facebook comment that I had qualified to receive free Wordy Cakes. Yesterday, I tasted my first divine sampling of Paul’s cakes.
Packed in pairs on pop-corn paper wrapped and with kitchen film, the Wordy Cakes sell for Two Thousand Uganda Shillings (2,000/=) per pack. A secret ingredient makes the cakes spongy, fluffy, chocolatey and very yummy. The highlight of the innovation is that on each pop-corn paper packaging are hand written inspirational quotes which the baker hand writes on a daily. Paul is able to deliver as many pre-ordered Wordy Cakes to any location in Uganda. Deliveries within Kampala cost only 2,000/=. And so, as unemployment is rocking Uganda’s youths, it was inspiring to encounter a young man who set out on his own to create his own employment!.”
Now I know, inspiration doesn’t come from afar, inspiration doesn’t come from doing things that are out of this world, and inspiration is usually that small dose that you add to whatever you do. Here’s Paul Kisakye, a man inspiring Ugandans one cake at a time.
You can save a lot of money on books, because for every message you find in the books, Kisakye brings you the same messages with his wordy cakes. Quotes from men like Martin Luther King Jnr and so many others.
How I wish our corporate brands could pick a leaf and re-brand their marketing in ways that reach out deeply to us? How I wish these brands could turn our souls and minds the way Wordy Cakes is doing it? Yes, let it be said, that the revolution was started with Cakes, cakes that spoke, cakes that were named Wordy Cakes.
