A heart-breaking series of events unfolded when a woman who monitors police activity in her local area and posts updates on Twitter tweeted about an accident on a nearby motorway.
“The #SamsungTwitterParty is back! Get ready to party the night away come 19th December at Zone 7 with fellow tweeps. Entrance is 15,000shs. Call 0775439894 for details. Great music and drinks.”
Caran Johnson, who monitors police scanners and tweets under the handle @scancouver, began tweeting about the accident yesterday afternoon.
It was soon confirmed that the accident, which took place in Washington state in the US, near the Oregon state line, was fatal.
She then realised that her husband Craig, who uses the same section of motorway and had left work early, was not answering his phone.
Around three hours after she first began tweeting about the crash, Mrs Johnson’s worst fears were realised.
Washington State Patrol and police in Vancouver confirmed that Craig R Johnson, 47, died at 1.40pm local time (9.40pm UK time) when his Hyundai crossed the lane dividing and hit an oncoming truck.
A 50-year-old woman in the other vehicle survived the incident but is in hospital with serious injuries.
The circumstances behind the crash are not known, but Mrs Johnson had tweeted that her husband suffered from epilepsy.
Amazingly, Mrs Johnson resumed tweeting later that evening, thanking people for their support online.
