What to Wear on a First Date

black-couple-on-a-date-pf-378x414What to wear when you’re meeting a guy, especially for the first real date, can be just as nerve-wracking as what you’ll talk about or how you’ll eat your tofu cheeseburger without looking like a caveman. We’ve all been there – that frantic dig-through of your entire closet, clothes piling around you as the clock ticks down and everything you own suddenly looks hideous. You aren’t sure whether to go for sexy or low-key, heels or flats… It’s enough to make you want to cancel on him and stay home to watch Bridget Jones’ Diary in your pajamas.

Relax! We’ve got you covered. Fashion expert Jennifer Kelton, founder and CEO of DressForTheDate.com, breaks it down for us. Your guy will notice if you’re feeling comfortable and sexy – and that confidence will take the date to the next level.

The Clothes

You can’t go wrong with a classic little black dress, Kelton says. Versatile and easy to wear, it should be a staple in every savvy girl’s closet. “Dress it up with heels, a statement necklace and a bold clutch handbag,” she says. “Or dress it down with ballet flats and a leather jacket.” Channel Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s for a no-fail look that’ll put you well on your way to a second date.

Another winning outfit is dark skinny jeans paired with a simple black top, she says.

Don’t take fashion risks on a first date, Kelton warns. “You may not feel your 100-percent-confident-self wearing a trend or style you’ve never rocked before, and that will show through to your date.” She’s also noticed that some of her male clients don’t like some current trends, such as high-waisted shorts or neon-on-neon.

Avoid clothes that don’t fit right. Squeezing into pants that are too small or wearing a top or dress that gives no shape to the female form is just not a good look, she says. “Wear an outfit that hugs your curves, but isn’t super tight.”

Belt loose tops and dresses at the waist to give a shapeless look some form.

The Shoes

“Be careful with heels,” Kelton warns. “You don’t want to be THAT girl hobbling in pain in her uncomfortable shoes. Wear a pair you’ve tested and know you can walk comfortably in.”

Bleeding toes? Not sexy.

The Jewelry

When accessorizing, Kelton advises sticking to one statement piece, such as a necklace. Overdoing the jewelry can look tacky, especially big earrings paired with a big necklace. When in doubt, going simple is always a better bet – think pearl earrings.

Remember: Your guy asked you out, not a jewelry box worth of bling.

The Makeup

“Keep your makeup simple and natural looking,” Kelton says. “Don’t let the MAC counter girl talk you into that neon purple eye shadow to wear on your first date!”

She recommends neutral colors on the eyes, some bronzer and blush on the cheeks, and a lipstick or gloss shade that compliments your skin tone. Let your natural beauty shine through!
