The inaugural edition of the West Nile Fashion Night was held on Saturday at Heritage Courts in Arua town. Held under the theme, “Fashion meets beauty”, it put the spotlight on local fashion designers with nine designers from with in the region showcasing on the evening. Those who showcased included Jermaine, Shem, Orions, Azisha, Shomi, Ellan Garments, Ochox, Nik Kat and Vss-vibian with kitege fabric dominating the designs exhibited.
According to Akuaku Sam, the brains behind the event, the West Nile Fashion Night is aimed at changing the locals’ attitudes towards fashion while also giving a platform to fashion designers with in the region to market themselves.
“Fashion-related things are generally frowned upon. We want to change this perception and that is why we have started this night where fashion designers from West Nile region can freely express themselves.” Akuaku Sam said.
“The platform is also aimed at marketing local fashion designers through showcasing their creative works to the public. We believe this will foster the growth of the fashion industry in the region.” He added.
The red-carpet event attracted a host of fashion lovers and enthusiasts who could not hide their excitement as they witnessed several of their own local models take on the runway. Sporadic cheers could be heard from the audience as different designers showcased their creations. The night was spiced up with dance showcases and artiste performances and went on till late.
