Former Miss Rwanda Sandra Teta, who is now the wife of singer Weasel Manizo, recently shed light on her decision for their children to exclusively speak English, foregoing any local languages. In an online interview, Teta expressed her perspective, emphasizing her discomfort in witnessing young children speaking Luganda or Kinyarwanda.
“My kids don’t speak Luganda or Kinyarwanda, they only speak English, why because to me it feels weird to see a little child speak Luganda. It feels so bad. Because I too, when growing up we didn’t speak our mother-tongue. But with time as they grow up, they will learn it,” Teta explained during the interview.
Sandra Teta and Weasel Manizo have been in a committed relationship for almost seven years now.
The couple, who have been together for a considerable period, are proud parents to two children.
Teta’s decision to have her children solely speak English reflects her personal beliefs and experiences.
While acknowledging that her children may eventually learn their mother-tongue as they grow older, she prioritizes English as the primary language for them.
The couple’s choice regarding their children’s language development is an individual decision, reflecting the diverse cultural and linguistic landscape of Rwanda and Uganda.
Teta’s explanation provides insight into the complexities of language choice within families, balancing cultural heritage with practical considerations in a globalized world.
