Vivo Energy Uganda, the distributor and marketer of Shell branded fuels and lubricants in Uganda, has recognized 424 high performing truck drivers and five transporters at the annual Drivers League awards ceremony that was held at the contractor transporter company- Uganda Transport Agencies Headquarters on Monday.

The Drivers League awards, which have been held since 2002, comprise of a structured process for measuring performance of the drivers’ road safety behavior and compliance. The drivers’ performance is scored on a monthly basis, with quarterly awards that culminate in an annual recognition. The drivers are categorised in classes A, B and C, depending on how they perform.

The drivers are rewarded for exceptional observance of road safety rules, as well as exemplary conduct while going about their work. The drivers exemplified outstanding professionalism as they delivered Shell fuels covering a distance of 14 million kilometres without any incident in the year 2020.

The overall winner of the year Mukasa Elimia, started working with Uganda Transport Agencies in 2019. Elimia was commended for strict adherence to all covid-19 Healthy and Safety measures, always showing a great attitude towards safe driving and operational excellence through consistent application of Defensive Driving skills among other things.

The other four drivers awarded included; Muwonge Joseph from Fred Sebyala Transport (FST), Kisoma Godfrey from Prime Fuels Uganda (PFU), Nsamba Abubakar from SIBED Transport Company Limited (SIBED) and John Kibe Mbugua from Multiple Hauliers East Africa Limited (MHEAL).

A total of 409 other drivers were also recognized for great performance and achieved Class A category.

“The Drivers League awards programme seeks to ensure that our drivers observe high professional conduct on the road and operate the highest road safety standards while delivering our products,” Mr Gilbert Assi, Managing Director, Vivo Energy Uganda said at the awards ceremony.

He added that “The league aims to reinforce our target of Goal Zero, which is our continuous commitment to run our business without causing any harm to people, assets and the environment. We are very proud of our drivers who maintain these standards, and in particular the gentlemen who are being recognized today.”

The theme for 2021,“Full Compliance in the new normal”, calls for the drivers’ commitment to the Goal Zero target and new ways of working in the evolving post Covid-19 reality that has brought about unprecedented disruption to personal and professional lives across the global.
