Vivo Energy Uganda, the company that distributes and markets Shell branded fuels and lubricants, has held fire management training at Green Hill Academy.
There have been numerous media reports on school fires in Uganda. The most memorable one happened in April 2008, when a Buddo primary school dormitory caught fire and 20 children burnt to death.
According to research that was carried out after the Buddo infernal, majority of Ugandan schools are not prepared to deal with fires. Fire safety policies and standards should be addressed by the Ministry of Education and School Management.
Police reports indicate that the level of awareness among the public on fire safety is very low making it difficult to control fire outbreaks and minimize destruction.
The training was conducted by George Wandera the Africa Road Safety Coordinator, Vivo Energy Group, who tipped the pupils on how to protect themselves against fire in case of any outbreak. He further demonstrated the use of fire extinguishers and led a team of Health and Safety representative pupils from Green Hill Academy on a safety tour of Vivo Energy Tank Farm Located on 8th Street Industrial area close to the school.
Vivo energy is conscious of her position in society and her consequent responsibility to nurture a safe environment for her neighbors, minimizing any potential threats and taking steps to equip citizens to be in a position to effectively combat fire scenarios should they unfortunately come to pass.
