
Uganda’s fastest growing private University, Victoria University has shown more intent to be the leading modern high learning institution by introducing new career and skills development driven courses.
Students intending to join the Jinja Road based University during the upcoming January intake can now apply for Bachelor of Environmental Science, Diploma in International Relations and Diplomatic Studies and Diploma in Tourism and Hotel Management.
Previously students could apply for oil and gas courses like Bachelor of Science in Oil & Gas Accounting, Certificate in Oil & Gas Law, Oil & Gas Project Management, Oil & Gas Health, Safety & Environmental Management, Supply Chain and Logistic Management and Oil and Gas Management under the department of petroleum and gas studies.
The Vice Chancellor of the Ruparelia Group owned university Dr. Stephen Robert Isabalija in an interview explained that they have partnered with international organizations like IP3 in providing some of the courses.
Other courses include Business Administration, Procurement and Logistics, Banking and Finance, Public Administration, Social Work & Social Administration, Journalism and Media Studies, Human Resource Management and Int. Relations and Diplomatic Studies.
Under the department of Science and Technology students can choose to study Computer Science, Business Information Systems, Business Computing and Information Technology. in the same manner the Health Sciences has courses like Public Health, Environmental Health Science, Midwifery Science, Nursing Sciences and Nutrition & Dietetics.
“We offer a wide variety of courses and our qualifications are designed to meet the needs of the market place. We have established links with a number of Professional and Corporate companies and constantly review our portfolio to ensure that it meets both students’ requirements and current sophisticated employer needs.” Isabalija explained.

Skills development
Victoria University according to Isabalija is aiming at bridging the skills gap by aptly training students, offering suitable internship positions and equipping them with self help practical skills. “Like our students who do international relations work with the ministry of foreign affairs which means they leave this school skilled, same with oil and gas students, we take them to oil fields for practical studies,” he explains.
Through research driven education, Victoria University wants to be the best university in east and central Africa. He says this can be achieved by giving providing solutions to African challenges, partnering with government and private sector.
Why Victoria University
The entrepreneurial promoters of the University have the passion for education, which can’t be doubted considering their extensive investment in education right primary, secondary and university levels.
“Our classrooms are top notch with air conditioning, not that we don’t have good air in Uganda, but we believe students must be in good environment and that the temperature must be controlled,” Isabalija states.
The University issues a laptop to each student for free which exposes them to news of doing research.
“The whole campus has internet; also our class rooms have projectors and interactive blackboards. So in a way we are exposing our students to how international schools in the western world operate,” he says adding that students stay in a clean environment which is not common in other universities.
The University assists all International students in obtaining student visa as per the standing rate at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The 2015 student visa rates are: $25 for 3 months,$50 for 6 months, and $100 for 12 months.
