In the Ugandan music industry, it can be hard to stay creative and full of life, but this rap duo is always swimming against the tide, bringing a music style that is anything but the usual.
Yesterday, YC & HAB dropped their music video for P.S.V., which tells the rib-cracking story of a Kampala taxi driver who falls in love with a passenger and diverts his ride all the way to Mbarara in an effort to score with the pretty lady.
This is the first of many videos to come from their debut EP titled “Sidda Mukyaalo” (never going back to the village). The album is comprised of familiar and funny Ugandan stories like “Askari,” in which a white guy passes through security so easily even though he’s actually a thief, and “Chotti Bahu,” which talks about how Indians do business in Uganda. The next video in the pipeline will be a Wakaliwood-style rap battle for “Wabula Naawe” (coming soon).
YC & HAB call themselves your favourite bayaaye because of their carefree attitude, which you can really feel in their songs. When it comes to originality, fun, humour and creativity, these two are spot on. It is outstanding how they can blend together so many languages. HAB (Hussein Abdul Bar) is Munyoro of Nubian decent and raps in Luganda, English, Runyoro, Nubi and Swahili. Young Cardamom AKA YC (Zohran Mamdani) raps in English, Hindi and astonishingly smooth Luganda!
When asked about the new video for P.S.V., YC said: “We’re hoping for people to just have a good time. We hope people feel what we felt when we were shooting: just fun, friends, weirdness and spontaneity!”
YC & HAB base their music on a unique partnership driven by their different experiences in Kampala as they know it. These two are all about keeping it real, original, fun and dope. Their music is definitely worth checking out.
