If you think you’ve seen it all when it comes to Uganda’s soul artistes, then you have to think twice. Last week, our very own, Christina Matovu swept the judges of The Voice UK off their feet in the 2015 blind auditions.
Christina Matovu gave an emotional performance of Ella Eyre’s ‘If I Go’, wowing Ricky and landing a spot on his #TeamRicky ahead of the Battles.
Christina, 24, started singing in church when she was a child, so gospel is her home. She’s been singing professionally for six years, and is in the London Community Gospel Choir. She firmly believes that music is a place where she can show her true self and also a place where she is most vulnerable. Her biggest musical influence is her big brother Dagless, who used to be in bands when she was growing up.
She draws her musical inspiration from Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Kierra Shears.
According to a review of her performance on Unreality TV, when Christina took to the stage, she blew the coaches away, but surprisingly enough, it was only Ricky Wilson who turned around, meaning that Christina automatically earned herself a place on Team Ricky. But she did manage to get Rita Ora all emotional, and Tom Jones revealed he had no excuses as to why he didn’t hit his button and turn around.
Here’s what the coaches had to say:
Rita Ora: “Without me getting really emotional, you should be very proud and I am very happy to have you on the show”.
Tom Jones: “I have no excuse as you are a great singer, but the only thing I felt was that you were giving too much. That’s the only reason, but you’re going to be incredible on this show”.
Ricky Wilson: “You had a great voice and I couldn’t miss you. The potential is incredible”.
