Uganda’s Michael Kiwanuka nominated in the 2021 Grammy Awards

The 63rd GRAMMY Awards are right around the corner and have been slated to air on Sunday, Jan 31, 2021 but the most interesting news is that Uganda has its first ever representation in the awards this time round.

With Michael Kiwanuka, a Ugandan lineage singer, song-writer and record producer, all seems well for the country after being nominated in the upcoming Grammy Awards edition under the ‘Best Rock Album’ category.

“I’m so proud and over the moon to say that my album ‘KIWANUKA’ has been nominated for a Grammy!!!!! I can’t believe it. So excited that I could pop. My mind is well and truly blown!!!” Michael Kiwanuka wrote.

The ‘Best Rock Album’ is one of the stunning categories of the 83 Grammy Awards categories and its for albums containing at least 51% playing time of new rock, hard rock or metal recordings.

Its confirmed Michael Kiwanuka’s ‘Kiwanuka’ album will be tussling-out with Fontaines D.C. (A Hero’s Death), Grace Potter (Daylight), Sturgill Simpson (Sound & Fury), The Strokes (The New Abnormal).

About Michael Kiwanuka;

Michael Samuel Kiwanuka, born 3 May 1987 is a British singer-songwriter and record producer who is signed with Polydor Records.

Born and raised in Muswell Hill, London, Kiwanuka is the son of Ugandan parents who escaped H.E Iddi Amin Dada’s regime in Uganda.

He attended Fortismere School, leaving there in 2005 after completing his A-Levels. He went on to study at the School of Media, Arts and Design at the University of Westminster

His 2012 debut album, Home Again, went gold in the United Kingdom and his second album, Love & Hate, debuted in 2016 at number one.

He has been nominated for numerous honours, including the Brit Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, and BBC Music Awards.

In January 2012, he won the BBC’s Sound of 2012, and in September 2020, he won the Hyundai Mercury Prize which he considers an absolute dream come true to win something that celebrates the art of the album and British music.
