Renowned Ugandan film director, producer, and actor John Segawa has called for national recognition of music icon Jose Chameleone, suggesting he be honored as a hero in Uganda’s entertainment history.
Segawa asserts that when Chameleone eventually passes, he deserves a national burial at Kololo Airstrip to commemorate his contributions to the country.
Segawa highlighted that Chameleone’s impact extends beyond music; he has been a foundational figure in Uganda’s entire entertainment industry.
According to him Chameleone is the “Godfather” of Uganda’s music scene, as he transformed the industry by pioneering songs in Luganda rather than solely in English, setting a new standard and broadening the reach of Ugandan music.
“What Uganda’s entertainment industry is today is because of Jose Chameleone,” Segawa stated, noting that Chameleone’s influence inspired an entire generation of youth and gave rise to celebrated artists, including Bobi Wine.
According to Segawa, Chameleone’s unique style and pioneering efforts made him incomparable within the industry.
These remarks come at a time when many legendary figures in Ugandan entertainment, like Chameleone, feel underappreciated.
Segawa’s sentiments reflect a growing call for recognition of such artists’ contributions to Uganda’s cultural identity.
