Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), on Tuesday, closed down Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium over tax arrears amounting to UGX 484million shillings. The closure is the second for the sports facility within a space of three years following the stadium management’s failure to honour their tax obligations.
It should be remembered that the city-center based facility was closed down in 2013 due to unpaid taxes of about UGX386 million and later reopened after the Nakivubo Stadium management reached a common ground with the tax collecting authority and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). However, URA’s debt manager, Mr. Abdusallam Waiswa says that they have failed to fulfill the terms, which included remitting all their taxes, as agreed in their MoU.
According to, Mr Abdusallam, they (URA) will have to auction off some of the property belonging to Nakivubo Stadium to recover their money but all business activities within the facility will be at a standstill in the meantime.
