Uganda Police Launches ManHunt for Paddy Kitayimbwa for Bail Violation

Uganda Police have initiated a nationwide search for journalist and blogger, Paddy Kitayimbwa, who failed to comply with bail conditions set after his arrest on September 23rd 2023. Kitayimbwa was apprehended for possessing the National Unity Platform’s red beret, considered illegal by law enforcement as it is designated as their official regalia.

Following his arrest, Kitayimbwa was granted bail on the condition that he report to the police monthly. However, he breached these terms by failing to present himself to the authorities in April, prompting the launch of a countrywide manhunt.

The NUP red beret has been a symbol of defiance against the government, with possession of it often resulting in arrests and legal actions. The authorities have labeled it as an unlawful accessory, reserved exclusively for law enforcement.

Kitayimbwa’s evasion of bail conditions underscores the heightened tensions surrounding political dissent in Uganda. The incident has drawn attention to the ongoing debate over civil liberties and freedom of expression in the country.

The Uganda Police urge anyone with information regarding Kitayimbwa’s whereabouts to come forward and assist in his apprehension. Failure to comply with bail conditions is a serious offense under Ugandan law and could result in additional legal consequences for Kitayimbwa upon his capture.

As the manhunt intensifies, the case of Paddy Kitayimbwa serves as a focal point in the broader discussion of political activism and the rule of law in Uganda.
