Uganda won five medals at the just concluded commonwealth games in Glasgow that ended on Sunday 3rd August. Of the five medals, one was gold and all the other four were bronze. Uganda’s only gold medal was won by Mosses Kipsiro in the 10,000metres even when he had not officially gone with the commonwealth team but joined them in Scotland and requested for a chance to participate.
After his participation in the IAAF tournament in the USA, Kipsiro chose to seek asylum in Scotland for a fortnight due to fears that he would be denied a Visa to travel back to Scotland following his wrangles with the Uganda Athletics Committee after he openly revealed to the media that some coaches sexually abuse female athletes.
Meanwhile, the four bronze medals were won by Mike Sekabembe who was denied a shot at gold after he was ruled out for failing a medical test ahead of his semifinal fight and Fazil Juma Kagwa in boxing. Joshua Cheptegei and Winne Nanyondo also won theirs in Athletics. Nanyodo won a bronze and missed silver by an inch after coming third in the women’s 800metre finals.
Uganda came 18th on the medal winning table that was led by England who won 174 medals, 54 of which were gold and most of them coming from the athletics side of the tournament. Australia and Scotland came 2nd and 3rd respectively.
