The Uganda Cycling Association through the Kampala City Cycling Club has  organized a competition as they remember the associations’ late president Robert Kiwendo.

The race that was flagged off at the MultiChoice Uganda headquarters in Kololo on Friday morning saw racers from the various cycling clubs gather to take part in the competition.

While speaking at flag off of the competition, Dr Patrick Semambo from the Uganda Cycling Association noted that it was more than just a competition. “Robert’s passion and love for the cycling sport was like no other. His goal even as the president of the association was to see the sport grow such that home grown talent can compete at an international level.”

“This race will serve as a reminder to all cyclists taking part, that we should all commit to emulating and accomplishing some of the late Kiwendo’s dreams for the sport.” he added.

Kiwendo who succumbed to COVID-19 in July this year was the IT Manager at MultiChoice Uganda and also the owner of  Super Cycling Club.  In a brief eulogy, the late Kiwendo’s workmates mentioned how his love for the sport spread out to the extent that each and every one at MultiChoice associated Kiwendo with cycling.

Joan Semanda Kizza, the PR and Communications Manager MultiChoice Uganda at the flag off of the race mentioned that it was indeed an honor to carry on with the ties and relations with the Uganda Cycling Association. ‘It is befitting to have a race in honor of the Late Kiwendo who according to many had the sport at heart. It would have brought the late Kiwendo so much joy to have a cycling race flagged off from the MultiChoice Headquarters, thus we didn’t think twice when it came to having the race kick off from here.”

The competition was organized to honor, remember and carry on the legacy of Robert Kiwendo, a cyclist, cycling enthusiast, former President of the Cycling Association of Uganda who believed in the potential and talent of young cyclers.

It will be a 3-day event which will include Individual time trials, Team time trials, and Mixed Relay. The grand finale will be held on Sunday where different winners will also be awarded.
