Uganda Cranes are like ‘orphans’, says FA President

President of the Ugandan FA, Moses Magogo, has said the Cranes team are like ‘orphans’ at the 2014 Africa Nations Championship.

“We are the only team that is not supported by the government and yet all the other 15 taking part in this tournament have support from their respective governments,” the bitter President said on Tuesday.

The Cranes, who have not been facilitated by the government, started the tournament on a winning note by beating Burkina Faso 2-1 in a Group B game played on Sunday.

The team, handled by coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic, stands a high chance of making it to the quarterfinals if they beat Zimbabwe tomorrow.

Magogo explained that although they sent a budget to the government to fund the team, the FA has fully sponsored the team that represents all 37 million Ugandans.

He called upon the government to get serious and support the football team because it has the potential to do even better and market the country in tourism as well.

“Even with the little resources we the administrators are struggling to get to fund the team, they are still performing. If government comes in fully, I am sure we can even start qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations and other bigger tournaments,” reasoned Magogo.

The government of Uganda last supported the national team late last year for the trip to Morocco where the team faced Senegal in a 2014 World Cup qualifier which determined which team progressed to the play-offs.
