The team that represented Uganda at the recently concluded Commonwealth games in Glasgow, Scotland returned home aboard Fly Emirates last Thursday. Unlike previous years, no player or participant was reported to have been left behind in Scotland. The team arrived at the Entebbe air port, around 2:00pm and was warmly welcomed by the sports and education ministers, Charles Bakabulinde and Jessica Alupo respectively.
The teams returned home with a record win of five medals in the sports of boxing and athletics. Among the five medals was one gold won by Mosses Kipsiro in the 10,000meter heat of the meals. He went ahead to make history as he became the first athlete to win gold in the 10,000meter two times consecutively at the commonwealth games, his first coming in 2010 in Delhi in India and the latest at Glasgow in Scotland 2014. Still in athletic, Abraham Kiplimo won bronze and Winnie Nanyondo put the icing on the cake as she well represented the females by winning a bronze medal in the 800meter of the ladies after coming 3rd in the finals.
Elsewhere Mike Sekabembe and Fazil Juma Kagwa won bronze in the super heavy weight and the light fly weight respectively as they tried to revive Uganda’s glory in the championship since 1990 when Godfrey Nyakana won gold for the country.
The teams were taken then taken for a special dinner by the sports minister, Charles Bakabulindi who thanked them for their struggles and efforts they made to see Uganda well represented at the tournament. The gold winner dedicated his medal to president Museveni as a vote of thanks to his endless financial sport that helped him to fly out for the competition and also having his injuries treated. The teams were however unable to meet the president due to his absence but the minister promised that it would be organized over the weekend.
Congulagiratons to all winners and participants at the commonwealth games of 2014 Glasgow, Scotland.
