Uganda Breweries Ltd (UBL), home to world renowned brands including Johnnie Walker, Uganda Waragi, Smirnoff, Gilbeys and J&B has launched a new exciting mixed-drinks campaign called “Sundowner”.
This ground breaking campaign will introduce Ugandans to different fun and exciting ways to drink Whisky, Gin, Vodka and other premium spirits. Urbanites of Uganda can expect do discover how to mix internationally renowned classic cocktails like; The Johnnie Ginger, The So-Ug, The Black Swagger and the world famous Gin & Tonic.
“Sundowner seeks to demystify the perception that spirits are too harsh to drink in light occasions like after-work or the relaxed start of a night out. By giving Ugandans more options for how to drink spirits (instead of just neat), they can enjoy very exciting, delicious, easy drinking mixed versions of our spirits that a suitable for light drinking occasions”, said Rhona Namanya, Brand Manager of Johnnie Walker Uganda.
The Sundowner campaign will introduce a new drinking concept and will cultivate a new culture of having a cocktail as ‘THE’ drink of choice at sunset.
According to Miss Namanya, “There is no better way to enjoy sunset than a beautiful cocktail whether in a bar or at home, or even at a house party, so where ever you are at 6 pm – it’s Sundowner Time”.
Kampala is undoubtedly Africa’s most vibrant city and thanks to great all year round weather Sunset is always a fantastic time to get together with friends and enjoy a drink. The Sundowner looks to become a popular trendy choice of drink to start an evening.
During the period of the campaign, Ugandans will be treated to exhilarating Sundowner events and activities like tastings, in store promotions, and social media interactions that will give them the opportunity to discover different ways to make their own cocktails at home, after work or at a party.
On Friday 8 August, famous Ugandan singer, Cindy Sanyu will host the first ever Sundowner Party at the now popular Sky Lounge. With top class bartenders mixing lavish cocktails and fantastic entertainment, it promises to be a thriller for all who will attend.
Another exciting element of the campaign will kick off on 29th July and run through the month of August. “Anyone who buys a bottle of Johnnie Walker, Uganda Waragi, Smirnoff, Gilbeys and J&B in most outlets will get a free mixer like Coke, Ginger Ale, Tonic and Spite that go well to make great tasting Cocktails.
Kampala can expect to experience some exciting new easy-to-make cocktails that are great for making at home with friends, or even to order from a bar. One of the most unexpected of the cocktails is the Johnnie Ginger, a bright, lively sparkling mix of Johnnie Walker Red Label and Ginger Ale poured over ice and garnished with a slice of lime.
“Making cocktails is a fun experience whether you do it yourself or watch someone else do it. Shaking, stirring, pouring, garnishing, sieving, infusing, and all kinds of other tricks that make cocktails tend to be entertaining and can liven up even the most chilled occasions. With Sundowner we are looking to show urbanites how to do this cool stuff themselves, so these exciting cocktail recipes will be available on a new Facebook page www.facebook.com/SundownerUG and a twitter page @SundownerUG where drinks enthusiasts can share ideas and even create their own signature mixes”, says Namanya.
Three years in a row and most recently in March this year, UBL has run a bartender training series called Master Bar Academy with top 400 bar men in the country learning how to make and serve great drinks. This has all been in preparation for the Sundowner campaign aimed at ensuring that bar-goers can call for any of these great cocktails and have it served perfectly at any of the top bars in the country.
“We have been trained by global experts on how to mix the best cocktails in the world, using the best brands like Smirnoff, Johnnie Walker and our very own Uganda Waragi. I can’t wait to see more people asking for these drinks when our new bar Liquid Silk opens”, said Jude Kiwanuka, winner of the 2013 Bartender of The Year Competition.
