Unilever Uganda under the Blue Band brand last week held its Western Uganda fun day at independence grounds in Mbarara.
The fun day is part of the activities lined up under the brand’s ongoing Blue Band HI 5 National puzzle challenge competition. During the fun day, the top performing schools in a particular region are rewarded with customized goodies.
In Mbarara, over 300 children from several schools, with their teachers were hosted to an array of unique fun events that included; active play and education activities such as health talks, obstacle courses, mini ball games, among others. Healthy snacks and refreshments were also provided to all visiting schools as fitness and dance routines continued throughout the fun day.
This all culminated into a colorful awards ceremony that saw three top schools; Boma Primary school , Mbarara Municipal school and Uganda Martyrs Primary School, Mbarara walk away with prizes.
“Many children across Uganda face a number of challenges due to malnutrition. This is because they do not get the recommended daily micronutrients in their meals combined as well as regular physical exercise,” Said Dr.Sabrina Kitaka a leading Pediatrician with Mulago Referral Hospital and Lecturer at Makerere University Medical School, who also doubles as Blue Band’s Brand Ambassador.
Also speaking at the at the fun day, Unilever’s Brand Manager for Spreads, Isaac Lutwama assured participants that the company would continue educating Ugandans on the value of nutrition.
“Blue Band always focuses on optimal nutrition because we believe that it is the surest way to ensure that children are not at the risk of getting obese and malnourished. We are encouraging children, parents and teachers to make healthy food choices and engage in regular exercise for daily growth,” he said.
The Blue Band Hi 5 challenge aims at reaching over 500,000 children nationwide through engaging 1000 schools using the optimal nutrition message. The promotion runs till December 2015 where top schools regionally will get a chance to win 25 million for a school project and top token collectors from top schools will walk away with school fees for a year courtesy of Blue Band.
