Away from who’s wrong and who’s not. The stand-off between Stella Nyanzi and Mamdani tells us many things.
1. It’s representative of a total break-down of institutions and systems in this country. In Uganda, it doesn’t matter much what your appointment letter said or what your terms dictated. It also doesn’t matter whether your work ethic is like that of Molly or Benjamin in Animal farm. As long as you don’t suck up to your boss, as long as you don’t praise them, laugh at their boring jokes, you will never have peace or even a promotion.
2. It also represents a Management crisis in this country. We have too many managers, less people doing the actual work. In order to show they are working, the managers keep offering instructions that contradict and confuse the workers. The fact that an issue between two Makerere employees has to be solved by the Facebook panel says a lot about our institutions. First, it could be indicative that all the platforms of addressing complaints have failed thus the need to let the Facebook gang to have the final say.
3. This stand-off is a warning signal for the thriving Social-Justice Warriorism. Social Media has enabled this wave to take a greater effect. Social Justice Warriors always build a cult with their activism. The only way to win when against them is to have your own cult and to hit them just as hard! This is how I was able to win my own battle last year against Stella Nyanzi’s defamatory writings.
