Have you listened to a song and thought it’s the producer who did not do his/her best? We must all admit there is that one time you have listened to good lyrics and composition put to waste by a producer. However, we don’t expect this in an industry ranked among top five in the continent.
Today, we look at how we can predict the producers work won’t be outstanding and how they can up their game/work. Recording studios are categorized according to size and acoustic properties and in accordance to this, there are four types of recording studios, that is; Top-tier, Mid-tier, Project and lastly, Home.
Most, if not all Ugandan recording studios fall in the Home recording studio category. This category defies the definition of a recording studio which is a facility for sound recording and mixing. Ideally, both the recording and monitoring spaces are specially designed by an acoustician to achieve optimum acoustic properties. Home recording studios shun the modest recording technology.
Logic platinum 8 is the most recent technology. I have seen some Ugandan studios try to adapt to this in vain. I have seen only power record’s production doctor Renix use it comfortably as his counterparts keep downloading later versions of Fruity loops which is the most ancient production software or get younger versions of the mighty fruity loops.
Creating a conducive atmosphere for the recording party is paramount. Am glad producers respect this. Atleast every prominent recording studio has wall cushions for sound proof, acoustic isolation or diffusion or absorption of reflected sound that could otherwise interfere with the sound heard by the listener.
Only if producers respect the full ethics of sound production will they realise there is a whole vacuum in their profession.
