Longtime female singer Juliana Kanyomozi has recently opened up about her experience collaborating with singer-turned-politician Bobi Wine on the iconic song “Taata Wabaana Yani.”
In a series of radio interviews, Kanyomozi shared her thoughts and emotions regarding the song that helped catapult her into the mainstream music industry.
“I was very nervous when ‘Taata Wabaana’ came out. I was like, are they going to love it because I’m not a Muganda, I’m a Mutooro, but I grew up speaking Luganda,” Kanyomozi expressed during her radio appearances.
The collaboration came about when Bobi Wine, also known for his astute musical talent, pitched the idea to Kanyomozi.
At the time, she was working with Capital FM, having joined the station during her S.6 vacation period.
Despite her prior experience in singing, Kanyomozi had yet to make a significant breakthrough into the mainstream music scene.
However, “Taata Wabaana Yani” proved to be a game-changer for Kanyomozi. Unlike her previous songs, which were predominantly in English, the incorporation of Luganda lyrics in “Taata Wabaana” marked a pivotal moment in her career trajectory.
With “Taata Wabaana” and another hit, “Maama Mbiire,” Bobi Wine and Juliana Kanyomozi became dominant figures in the country’s music landscape during the early 2000s.
The fusion of their talents and the resonance of the Luganda-infused melodies captured the hearts of audiences across the nation, solidifying their status as musical icons.
As Kanyomozi reminisces about her collaboration with Bobi Wine and the impact of “Taata Wabaana” on her career, she highlights the significance of embracing cultural diversity within music, transcending linguistic barriers to create universally beloved melodies.
