The family of the late singer, instrumentalist, legend and an inspiration to many—Elly Wamala, has finally stood up and is petitioning James Wasula, General Secretary of Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS) accusing local artistes of ‘stealing’ Elly Wamala’s music.
Elly Wamala who suffered from a serious chronic cancer illness that later took his dear life left so many songs written only that they were not voiced. Several artistes who have had an opportunity to land on the songs have taken advantage of this to record songs in their own names. This includes Porny tail Don Mc Kapata who remixed “Ebiwunyo” and Ernest Nsimbi aka GNL Zamba with “ani yali amanyi”.
Phiona Mukasa, a daughter to the late Elly Wamala, who dwells in UK has accused these fellas of doing all this without the family’s Consent. And she is predicted to be the main brains behind the accusation as she constantly flies into the country to follow up the case.
If UPRS effects the request of the late singer’s family then anyone who would like to redo his songs must first seek authorisation.
