Ten Things You Should Never Say During a Breakup

break upBreaking up is hard to do. Regardless of whether you’re the dumper or dumpee, if you find yourself in an ending relationship, try to refrain from saying the following things. Some of them are cliché, some will be interpreted as insincere, and others will likely be regretted in the days that follow. (We don’t blame you from thinking them, though.)

Ten things you should never say during a breakup:

1. “I never loved you.” Related: “I wish I never met you.” Don’t up the drama factor just because you’re hurt. You’re hurt because you did love him/her. Be honest with yourself.

2. “Let’s just be friends.” Don’t. Related: “I hope things won’t be awkward.” They will.

3. “I hope you die alone.” Related: “You’ll be sorry.” Curses and threats of revenge are never wise. Take the high road and keep these destructive thoughts to yourself.

4. “Is there anything I can say or do to change your mind?” Don’t beg. His/her decision has been made. Respect that.

5. “It’s not you, it’s me.” Related: “You deserve better.” Self-deprecation often comes across as insincere and rehearsed.

6. “Can I still live here?” No, you can’t. You shouldn’t want to, either. Let it end.

7. “I need space.” Related: “I don’t know what I want.” Avoid vague phrases that have too many interpretations. If you’re initiating the breakup, make sure your partner is clear that that is what you’re doing.

8. “My parents never liked you.” Related: “You’re a horrible kisser.” Don’t spew hurtful comments and insults just because you can. Keep it classy.

9. “I love you, I’m just not in love with you.” Only say this if you’re prepared for a “What the heck is that supposed to mean?!” retort. Don’t use “love” as a reason to break up.

10. “Will you marry me?” Never propose out of desperation. Ever.
