Uganda Cranes defender Denis Iguma has said team work and an early goal helped them see off Madagascar in the return leg of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier on Saturday.
South African based striker Geoffrey Massa scored the lone goal after 12th minutes to make sure the Cranes qualified on an away goals rule after scoring a goal in the 2-1 loss in the first leg.
“We knew we had to work hard to progress. “It was not going to be easy against Madagascar. But luckily we got that early goal that changed everything,” said the SC Victoria University defender.
With the Cranes now set to face the winner between Equatorial Guinea and Mauritania in the second round, Iguma said they will have to improve and get sharper in front of goal.
“We were played to a result but I think we could have done better with more goals. “Luckily we have made it to the next level so we have to work harder if we are to reach the group stage,” he added.
