Ruyonga-Ugandan-Gospel-Rapper

By Moses Abeka

Like a miner salvages gold from muddy depth of the earth or lustrous diamond beneath a rock, Christian rap also known as gospel hip hop is a gem drawn out from the secular hip-hop culture whose values and traditions are deemed unworthy in Christian aspects. Secular rap themes shade tones of pride, money, sex and violence, painting a distasteful picture hurting eyes of Christian faithfuls.

Despite the negative outlook, hip-hop cannot be ignored. It is compelling movement that has got the youth dreaming thus some have looked at the picture in another angle embracing the art of poetry to evangelize. One of them is Edwin Ruyonga.

Vicious bass and drum beats delivered with rhymes flowing effortlessly like Sipi falls, Edwin Ruyonga formerly known as ”Krukid” is a force to reckon, a commander of a movement. With less than a year on the mainstream local scene, the rapper has been rated among Africa’s finest rappers by DSTV.

Wait a minute… wait a minute, he is no stranger to recognition. The ”Tutuuse” singer while in the States was rated by Rawkus an online site among the top 50 rappers in the world. He has sold out 3 albums on digital platforms like iTunes. ”He (Ruyonga) will not be with us for long”,Mister Deejay mentions of the artiste, prospecting that he will soon swoop a major international record deal.

With footsteps on the moon, the sky is no limit! Christian rap music is in clubs, streets and gaining momentum.

His latest album, ”Victory music”, will be launched on 9th August. Be a witness of this movement.
