Maurice Kirya, every month, invites artistes to his The Sound Cup café located at Garden City. It is an alright initiative, if you ask me. Given the fact that the arts are given a backseat in this dusty town of ours. The execution of the idea was good and if everyone has a mindset like Maurice Kirya’s, who knows the arts have a proverbial bright future in our country. This month, on Thursday, the artiste that was left with the Harlequin task to entertain avid patrons to the famous café was none other than Steve Keys. He labels himself Keys because, oh boy, he is a keyboard extraordinaire. He is good with his fingers and his voice is a reflection of what he does with the keys. What he does with his fingers, he can equally do it with his crooning voice.
He brought the house down with his terrifyingly good performance. Over the past days, it has steadily remained raining which makes it cold like a block of ice. And on Thursday, it wasn’t any different. It was cold like twigs after a frost. But Steve Keys brought the much-needed warmth with his performance. He did what Cover Bands are bound to do; singing renditions of other acts like John Legend. Something, of late, music purists have trouble with; they claim that these bands should get out of their comfort zones and record something of their own. Nonetheless, Steve Keys did a brisk job, skirting and delicately tiptoeing through other music icons’ songs with sheer smartness. It was an evening well spent. With a keyboard in front of him, Steve Keys brought The Sound Cup down with his rich craftsmanship.
