While travelling, one thing you may overlook is fashion. Each country has their own traditional wear as well as a unique street style. Ugandans are amongst the most stylish people on the continent. They love bright colours and dressing up in lavish fabrics whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Gomesi
Also called a Busuuti, it is a colorful floor-length dress. It is the most commonly used costume for women in Buganda and Busoga. It is known for the unique shape of the shoulders and is always made with brightly coloured fabric.
Kanzu
This is the male traditional attire. The Kanzu is either plain white or cream, in some cases it will have embroidery that goes down the front, depending on which region. It is also seen in other parts of East Africa like the Waswahili of the Kenyan and Tanzanian coastal regions, as well as with the Borana of Ethiopia.
Mushanana
The mushanana is a shared traditional dress too. It is found among the Banyoro people of western Uganda as well as in Rwanda. It consists of two pieces of fabric, one tied as a skirt and another draped over the shoulder. It is usually made of heavy silk or light chiffon material with bright designs.
Kitenge fashion
Kitenge refers to heavy material that has an African print and is decorated using a traditional batik method. It has been used in the past to make traditional dresses and head wraps all over Africa. In the recent years, a number of designers like Sylvia Owori and Buqisi-Ruux have brought back this so-called old fashioned material in fun and interesting ways.
