Stecia Mayanja has opened up about a difficult chapter in her life, revealing that she was admitted to a mental facility following a series of overwhelming personal events.

In an emotional recount, Stecia shared that her ordeal began when her daughter fell seriously ill for nearly two months.
Despite visiting several hospitals, including Mengo and Mulago, it was only at Nakasero Hospital that her daughter finally received effective treatment and showed signs of recovery.
“She used to cough so badly, I thought her life was ending,” Stecia recalled. “We were admitted to Nakasero and spent so much time there that eventually they sent us away. But after just a day at home, things got worse again.”
The stress and exhaustion from caring for her sick child soon took a toll on Stecia’s own health. She began experiencing severe mental distress, including hallucinations.
“I started seeing imaginary people and talking to them,” she admitted. “They even began recording me because I would speak to myself, thinking I was seeing white people and angels dressed in white, coming to pick me.”
Concerned for her safety, her family decided to take her to Butabika Hospital, Uganda’s national referral hospital for mental health, as her condition worsened.
“I would bang my head on the walls,” Stecia shared. “They did MRIs, but they couldn’t figure out what was wrong. I even had a Canadian visa for 10 years, so I decided to travel there for help.”
