St. Kizito High School Namugongo is gearing up to host its annual Fish Festival this Saturday, November 9th 2024, inviting students, alumni, parents, and well-wishers to join in a lively celebration of aquaculture and practical skills development on the school grounds. The festival, part of the school’s end-of-year program, is designed to showcase the hands-on learning initiatives that have become integral to the students’ education beyond traditional classroom activities.

With a theme Promoting Competence-based Skills for aSustainable Green Future, the festival promises a day filled with cultural performances, demonstrations, and a unique focus on the benefits of fish farming. The school has invested in its own fish ponds, allowing students to learn the fundamentals of aquaculture, including the nutritional benefits of fish and the importance of sustainable fish farming. This approach not only equips students with practical skills but also broadens their understanding of food production and self-sustainability.

The fish served at the festival is entirely sourced from the school’s ponds, a testament to the hard work and dedication of students who have carefully raised and nurtured the fish under the guidance of their teachers. This project is just one of many skill-based initiatives offered by St. Kizito High School, students will also be showcasing student led projects in Energy (waste to briquettes, briquette oven technology, solar drying technology), Smart farming (solar irrigation, modern mushroom farming, smart poultry, black soldier-fly raring, modern fish farming, vertical gardening etc), Circular economy & (Innovative food waste processing into animal feeds, plastic waste reuse,) Green IT solutions, smart irrigation software’s and many more.

Through these projects, students have been educated on income-generating skills and environmental conservation, particularly as they transform waste materials into sustainable charcoal, promoting awareness about eco-friendly practices and reducing deforestation.

The festival is expected to attract teachers, students, parents, and school supporters from across the region. Attendees should look forward to student performances, cultural dances, and acts from guest entertainers, creating an atmosphere of excitement and community spirit. As a unique school initiative, the Fish Festival at St. Kizito High School Namugongo not only celebrates the students’ hard work and learning achievements but also serves as a model for other schools to integrate practical skill-building into their curricula.

St. Kizito High School invites all to be part of this one of a kind event, which offers not only delicious food and entertainment but a glimpse into the promising future of Uganda’s youth as they develop valuable skills to empower themselves and uplift their communities.
