Veteran Ugandan rapper Spyda MC has shared his thoughts on the country’s Hip Hop scene, explaining why he does not consider Gravity Omutujju and Fik Fameica to be fully-fledged Hip Hop artists despite acknowledging their rapping abilities.
Speaking in a recent interview, Spyda MC said that while the two musicians are free to identify as Hip Hop artists if they wish, their music catalogues tell a different story.
According to him, Gravity Omutujju is an exceptional rapper but his overall sound falls outside the Hip Hop genre.
“Gravity is a very good rapper, but he is not a Hip Hop artist because the kind of music he makes is different,” Spyda MC explained.
He went on to compare Gravity with Fik Fameica, noting that the latter comes closer to fitting the Hip Hop label because he has released several songs that are rooted in the genre.
“Fik Fameica has a few Hip Hop songs in his music catalogue, so he qualifies to call himself a Hip Hop artist amongst his fans,” he said.
Spyda MC even suggested that Fik Fameica has a stronger claim to the Hip Hop title than Gravity because of those records, although he maintained that neither artist is exclusively a Hip Hop act.
The remarks came as Spyda MC highlighted some of Uganda’s overlooked Hip Hop talents from different regions of the country. He praised the abundance of underground rappers, saying the local Hip Hop scene is filled with rare gems that deserve more recognition and support.
