The 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to an end, and true to the promise made by DSTV and GOTV from day one of the tournament — that Everything Could Wait, Sleep Could Wait — fans were treated to a final worth every late night.
Spain were crowned World Champions after beating Argentina 1-0 in extra time at the New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium) on Sunday.
Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, sealing Spain’s second World Cup title and their first since 2010.
The win also marked the end of what is widely expected to be Lionel Messi’s final World Cup appearance. The 39-year-old Argentine captain, who entered the final with eight goals and four assists for the tournament, could not inspire another late comeback, as Spain’s disciplined defence held firm throughout the match.
Spain dominated possession and created the better chances from the opening whistle.
However, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was outstanding, producing a record-breaking number of saves to keep his side in the game.
The turning point came in stoppage time of normal time, when Argentina’s Enzo Fernández was shown a red card, leaving his team to play extra time with ten men.
Spain made their advantage count soon after, as Nico Williams headed the ball into the danger area for Ferran Torres to finish from close range.
Argentina struggled to create any real attacking threat for the rest of the match, up against a Spanish side that finished the tournament with one of the best defensive records in World Cup history.
Spain conceded just a single goal in eight matches, setting a new benchmark for a World Cup-winning team.
Under coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain completed a remarkable, unbeaten campaign, eliminating Portugal, Belgium, and France en route to the final before overcoming Argentina to lift the trophy.
The triumph adds the 2026 World Cup to Spain’s recent European Championship success and cements the country’s place among football’s dominant forces.
For Argentina, the defeat brings an end to their bid to defend the title they won in Qatar in 2022.
Despite another memorable tournament from Messi, the defending champions fell just short against a younger, hungrier Spanish side led by stars such as Lamine Yamal, Rodri, and Ferran Torres.
