During contemporary times, it has been purported that Governor Rin Tueny has made threats against Engineer Chep Makur Chuot, following his public speech condemning inhumane acts being committed in Lake State under his authority.
Amongst these allegations is the arrest of 70 similarly-related individuals, including women, children, elders and chiefs, with no formal charges laid against them.
Adding to this purportedly unlawful act, Governor Rin also issued a decree for the installation of a new communal chief, which is contrary to established African and South Sudanese traditional practices whereby community members democratically elect their leadership.
Furthermore, the Governor allegedly confiscated over 200 cows belonging to the detained family members.
It is also alleged that Governor Rin has threatened to arrest or kidnap Eng. Chep Makur, Makuach Marial, Manuer Ngong, Chep Azuma, and Chuot Makur for speaking out against him.
Lastly, reports suggest that Governor Rin is currently forcing the detained family members to engage in hard labor on his farm as punishment, in addition to threatening to terminate Nilepet engineers from working with the government oil enterprise.
It is imperative to note that exercising such threats is not only against human rights act but also unconstitutional according to the laws of the Republic of South Sudan.
In light of these claims, it is worth asking, Who currently holds the position of president of South Sudan?
