Looks like Jason Derulo might not be welcome back to South Africa after an offensive remark he made while performing.
The singer was on stage at the South African of the Year Awards when he asked the audience: “Y’all speak English right?”
After making the seemingly ignorant comment people took to Twitter in their droves to vent at the star who was headlining the event.
One user was so angry she suggested the Watcha Say hitmaker make a sharp exit: “Jason Derulo needs to leave our country right now. How dare he?”
Another spat: ” So Jason Derulo asked us if we speak English?Lmao! Thats what we get when we leave our own talent & chase internationals. Andinayo ne-worry!”
Responding to the reaction Jason wrote on his Twitter page: “‘Speaking English’ remark I made, was directed to a specific table. It wasn’t literal just a figure of speech when someone isn’t responding.”
It wasn’t quite the heartfelt apology people were expecting and responded to the artist’s tweet with even more anger.
“Which figure of speech are we speaking here? Hyperbole, antithesis? Methaphor? Simile? Which one son?,” asked one user.
More followers began to call out the star’s music itself, teasing that they wanted fellow rapper Chris Brown to appear instead.
“Your music gives me a headache,” said one and another funny user added: “@jasonderulo we only respond to dope music. And we actually wanted Chris Brown.”
The singer hasn’t posted anything further on his social media accounts.
