Ugandan singer, songwriter, and producer Ronald Matovu, popularly known as Anko Ronie, has disclosed that the hit songs “Mateeka” and “Champion” were originally intended for singer Bebe Cool but ended up with Jose Chameleone.
Anko Ronie, who officially joined Bebe Cool’s Gagamel International Entertainment group in 2017, revealed in a recent interview on Galaxy TV that he had written the songs specifically for his boss. However, upon submission, the songs were turned down by Bebe Cool’s music screening team, led by an individual identified as Josh Killer
According to Ronie, the opportunity for the songs shifted when Jose Chameleone approached producer Renix for fresh music ideas crafted by other songwriters.
Renix recommended Anko Ronie, which led to the songs being passed on to Chameleone.
In the same interview, Anko Ronie mentioned that Bebe Cool expressed regret after discovering that he missed the chance to release the two major hits.
The songs “Mateeka” and “Champion” played a significant role in revitalizing Chameleone’s music career in 2018 after a period of dormancy.
Despite the missed opportunity, Anko Ronie’s contributions to Gagamel International were later acknowledged.
In 2020, Bebe Cool gifted him a Toyota Mark X as recognition for his remarkable input toward the success of Bebe Cool’s music projects.
Anko Ronie continues to be celebrated as one of Uganda’s talented songwriters and producers, whose work has left an indelible mark on the country’s music industry.
