The Maisha Superstar contestant, Richy Kaweesa’s rendition of Neera makes you forget the original track done by Mowzey Radio. Let’s get this straight: It was a wonderfully cooked song; wails and lamentations of a lover whinning for more and more and more. Radio did a brisk job, really. But have you listened to Richy’s version? You should.
The talented ballader takes it to an astronomical level. He borrows the melodic vocals of John Legend on this and he is unstoppable, like Washington. It is largely sang in English, which perhaps is the reason why you don’t hear it on your local radio station. Ugandans have a nonsensical tendency of feeding English songs to the dogs. But Richy’s version is hard to loathe. There is that lazy beat spilling in the background as Richy croons his way through.
At first, he will literally lose you, drop you in a jungle, but it is when he sings the chorus that the song takes shape. Don’t rush it. Never rush a good song. A good song is like a good woman. Hold it gently. Sit through it, hands on the chin, eyes clenched-shut and listen to Richy’s rich voice. Now, the debate rages on. Original song, or the rendition, what tickles your fancy?
