Smile Uganda launched the first true Fourth Generation Long Term Evolution (4G LTE) network in Uganda on 6 June 2013. Since then it has been delivering the fastest broadband internet service to its customers in Kampala, Entebbe and Mukono, with phased roll-out planned across Uganda over the next five years.
Experts in the IT sector predict that 4G LTE technology is set to become the global standard for the delivery of mobile data and voice services for the next decade at least, and possibly beyond. In keeping with our vision to be the broadband provider of choice in Uganda, Smile is glad to have put the country on the global map ahead of more advanced countries in Africa and around the world.
As Smile Uganda marks its first anniversary, the story of Africa and Uganda rising couldn’t be more real and achievable as ultra-high-speed internet access, stimulating digital innovation and accelerating broadband penetration all combine to deliver a radically improved user experience with far-reaching benefits.
Fiona McGloin, Smile Uganda Country Manager, attests to this, “4G LTE broadband can best be described as an ‘enabler’ and we are happy that Smile Uganda has already contributed, and will continue to contribute, to social and economic development in Uganda through its services. For the business sector, 4G LTE broadband will enable integrated, safer and faster transacting between buyer and seller. Productivity will increase as a result of faster communication. Business people can meet face to face online instead of being forced to sometimes travel thousands of kilometers.”
When it comes to communication, true 4G LTE broadband internet has finally eliminated time and distance. The result is that people, governments, businesses, communities and organisations in Uganda can stay in touch with each other and the rest of the world more easily and quickly, thanks to 4G LTE.
Recognising the role that education plays in the success of any country’s future, Smile Uganda launched a unique Corporate Social Responsibility programme through which it provides free routers and 20GB of free data per month to 20 schools in Kampala, five schools in Entebbe and, as from today, two schools in Mukono District.
Ever the innovators, Smile recently introduced their affordable Smile@home Night and Weekend Bundles. This offer, which is perfect for families that mostly use their home internet service outside business hours, is ideal for streaming videos or movies, watching sports, playing online games, chatting on Skype or surfing the Net for information on school projects.
As Smile marks their one-year anniversary, their promise to the businesses, companies, schools, institutions and families of Uganda is to continue providing them with the services and solutions that will enable them to grow and thrive in an increasingly competitive digital world.

Smile. Now you can.
