The Masaza cup tournament will take its final bend on Sunday with a final between last year’s second runners up Singo and 2004 champions Gomba at Mutesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.
At the semi-final stage, Singo saw off former champions Kyadondo who beat Buwekula to win the tourney in 2008 while 2004 champions Gomba defeated Busiro at the same stage. (Singo 3-1 Kyadondo and Gomba 2-0 Busiro on aggregate)
Gomba were the first county to win the tournament in its debut year (2004) when they beat Mawogola 3-0 in the finals. Singo have never won the ten year old tourney.
His Majesty, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II will be the chief guest at the Wankulukuku to grace the 10th final of the annual tourney. Henry Ssekabembe, a minister at the kingdom confirmed earlier this week that the Masaza finals will be played on 28th September 2014 as he addressed the media on Tuesday at the Bulange Mengo cabinet chambers.
“We are honoured to confirm that the finals of the Masaza Cup will take place this coming Sunday at Wankulukuku stadium and Ssabasajja Kabaka is pleased to attend in person”, Ssebakembe remarked.
The minister also guaranteed security from both the Uganda police as the case has always been and Kabaka’s own security.
The 10year old tournament has become so popular in Uganda’s football calendar after breeding so many superstars, some of who even play for the national team, the Uganda Cranes. Players like Francis Olaki, Denis Masinde Onyango, Geoffrey Baba Kizito, Miya Farouq, Yuda Mugalu, Mike Sserumaga, Yunus Junior Ssentamu, Farouq Kawooya, Sula ‘Malouda’ Matovu, Godfrey Bukenya, Godfrey ‘Jajja Walu’ Walusimbi, Robert Odongkara, Yasser Mugerwa, Imamu Bumbuli, Kenneth Tumusiime and many others have participated in the tournament before.
