Singer Iryn Namubiru is furious with Ugandan Dj’s for making money off her music without her permission. Iryn expressed her disappointment with Ugandan DJ’s not long after Bebe Cool was battling them over a related issue.
“It baffles me why a DJ or anybody else would put up my songs to be downloaded for free like I do not know how to do it myself. You call this promotion? No, I call it making a dime on my back! We spend so much buying these songs, recording, doing videos and promoting them just to see other people enjoying what we work hard for.” Iryn stated.
With copyright law yet to take effect in Uganda, Iryn noted that DJ’s should atleast get her consent as the bear minimum before using her music for their own selfish gains. “It is wrong and illegal for a DJ to remix my song, tag their names and upload on YouTube, without my consent. I scratch my head to find notes, to get the right beats and I may not necessarily like yours nor would I want those particular remixes to be shared on YouTube, Facebook or any other websites.” She added.
The ‘Birowoozo’ singer highlighted the fact that she is not afraid of Dj’s shunning her music because she has spoken out. “Many artists fear talking about this for fear that their songs won’t be played but hey, truth has to be told and if no Dj plays my songs then be it. Many of us have contracts with distributors where we do revenue shares, how on earth are we ever gonna make our money? Be ashamed!” she concluded.
